I have heard many people say that professionals in the web design and information technology profession have a reputation for being introverted. This is a gross over-generalization, but it does seem to be true for many of them. I have found that some of my friends in the web development community struggle to find new clients because they don’t always want to put themselves in the face of the community. Those who take the steps to venture into the community tend to have an easier time getting new clients.
Don’t Miss the Opportunity of Face-to-Face Networking
I recently read an article on 1st Web Designer (a site I used to write for) called “How to Get New Clients for Your Web Design Business.” Here are the tips that the author shared:
These are all great tips, but the piece didn’t really address anything related to face-to-face networking or building a relationship with people in your community. This is a marketing technique that people in the industry often ignore. This is also one of the best ways that they could be building their business.
I used to go to a lot of networking groups when I needed to build my business. I found that many of the people in those settings were looking for a web developer. Many of these people were in BNI groups and other organizations where freelancers in different industries would share leads with each other. However, they never found a qualified developer anywhere there.
This is a great opportunity that web developers shouldn’t ignore. You can have an edge over your competitors if you take a break from your computer and find people in the real world you can work with.
Networking Opportunities You Can Consider
There are a number of different networking activities you can use to find clients in the real world. Here are some strategies you may want to consider.
Join a BNI Group
BNI groups are networking organizations that allow you to connect with other professionals and refer business to each other. You can work with people in related professions, such as social media, marketing, logo designers and print advertising. I was a member of a BNI group in my home town and found that many people were asking me to do web design. If I was a designer I would have had a lot of business there.
Find Local Groups through Social Media
I used Meetup.com to look for communities of people in the web profession. I found a community called Web and Interactive Media Professionals. The group had programmers, front end developers, marketers and other web and IT professionals. Most of us received a lot of business through the referrals and connections we made in it.
Local Community Groups
You can also build a lot of business through local community groups and organizations. You may be able to build business by visiting Rotary groups, Chambers of Commerce, business incubator mixers and other groups in your area. You may not get business through these groups directly, but you can make some great leads to follow up on later on.
Don’t Miss Out on Real World Networking Opportunities
I have found that web designers and information technology consultants who actually network face-to-face tend to build their businesses much more quickly. Consider using some of these real-world networking tactics to generate leads and follow up in a timely manner. What tactics have you used to build your business?
